The American Board of Orthodontics presents the 2016 O.B. Vaughan Special Recognition Award to Dr. Steven Marshall
The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) awarded Steven Marshall, DDS, MS, of Barrington, Illinois, the O.B. Vaughan Special Recognition Award on Saturday, April 30 at the annual luncheon of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics, which was held in conjunction with the 2016 Annual Session of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) in Orlando, Florida.
The O.B. Vaughan Special Recognition Award is named in honor of Dr. O.B. Vaughan, an ABO past president. The ABO established this award to acknowledge those who have made significant contributions to orthodontic education and furthered the ideals of the ABO.
“My personal experience of becoming board certified and working to support ABO certification has been an important part of my professional growth,” Dr. Marshall said. “Mentoring others to pursue ABO certification has been extremely gratifying. I am truly honored to receive this recognition from the directors of the ABO.”
Dr. Marshall received his dental degree, master’s degree and certificate in orthodontics from Northwestern University Dental School. He has maintained a private practice and taught part time for 30 years. Currently, he is a visiting professor of orthodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. His scholarly activity includes serving on 49 master’s thesis committees, 11 of which he served as thesis committee director. He has co-authored one orthodontic textbook, three book chapters, 33 peer-reviewed articles and 13 abstracts. Additionally, he has made 22 presentations to component, constituent and national orthodontic organizations. He has served as an editorial consultant for the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJO-DO), The Angle Orthodontist and the Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists. He was honored as the AJO-DO’s top reviewer in 2012. He currently serves as the associate editor for the Clinician’s Corner section of the AJO-DO.
Dr. Marshall has served as councilor, mentor committee member and ABO preparatory course instructor for the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics. He has served as an ABO consultant examiner and is currently an ABO advocate for the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry.
In addition to scholarship and mentoring, Dr. Marshall has been actively involved in his component and constituent organizations. He received the Merit Award from the Illinois Society of Orthodontists and the Earl E. Shepard Award for Distinguished Service from the Midwestern Society of Orthodontists. He is a member of the E.H. Angle Society of Orthodontists (EHASO) and is past president of Angle Midwest, a component of EHASO.
