ABO awards the Dale B. Wade Award of Excellence in Orthodontics to Dr. G. Fräns Currier

 

The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) awarded Dr. G. Fräns Currier of Oklahoma City, Okla., the Dale B. Wade Award of Excellence in Orthodontics Saturday, May 4 at the annual luncheon of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics, which was held in conjunction with the 2013 Annual Session of the American Association of Orthodontists in Philadelphia, Pa.

The ABO bestows this award upon an exemplary senior clinician and diplomate who demonstrates exceptional dedication to orthodontics through clinical excellence and/or devoted teaching in the image of Dr. Dale B. Wade, a past president of the ABO. 

Dr. Currier, a diplomate of the ABO, is professor, chair and past program director of the Department of Orthodontics, and chair of the Division of Developmental Dentistry at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center College of Dentistry. Dr. Currier has held the Ram S. Nanda Endowed Chair in Orthodontics since 2005 and the Presbyterian Health Foundation Presidential Professorship since 2008. He is a founding graduate faculty member of the Department of Orthodontics.

During his tenure at the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Currier has been highly involved in university governance, serving on numerous committees and councils. He received the first Dean’s Service Award from the College of Dentistry in 1997. In 1998, Dr. Currier received the Regent’s Award for Superior Accomplishment in Professional and University Service. In 1999, the University of Oklahoma Faculty Senate recognized him for outstanding contributions to faculty governance. Dr. Currier received the Martin Dewey Memorial Award, the Southwestern Society of Orthodontists’ highest award, in 2011.

“I know of no one who is more passionately committed to the highest standards in education than Dr. Currier,” said Dr. Larry Tadlock, an ABO director. “Dr. Currier, through his leadership, is creating a true legacy at the University of Oklahoma.”

Dr. Currier has published extensively and has lectured in the United States and abroad. Dr. Currier is also a member of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics, the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists, as well as the International College of Dentists.

He earned his D.D.S. from the University of Michigan in 1967 and then served in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps from 1967 to 1969 in the Philippines. He earned his M.S.D. and certificate in pediatric dentistry from the University of Washington in 1971, his certificate in orthodontics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1977, and his M.Ed. from the University of Oklahoma in 1984.

“I am honored and humbled to receive the 2013 Dale B. Wade Award of Excellence in Orthodontics from the American Board of Orthodontics,” Dr. Currier said. “This recognition highlights for me a commitment to excellence in all aspects of orthodontics, from our clinical treatments to our devotion to teaching and creative activities through research endeavors and professional service. My background at different universities has allowed me to expand, reevaluate and be proactive to the changes we are facing today and tomorrow. I accept this award for our present and past students, faculty, staff and patients here at the University of Oklahoma and the members of the Southwestern Society of Orthodontists.”
