Dr. John E. Grubb Selected for the 2023 Dale B. Wade Award of Excellence in Orthodontics by The American Board of Orthodontics
The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) has named John E. Grubb, D.D.S., M.S., of Escondido, Calif., as the recipient of the 2023 Dale B. Wade Award of Excellence in Orthodontics.
The Dale B. Wade Award recognizes an exemplary senior clinician and board-certified orthodontist who demonstrates exceptional dedication to orthodontics through clinical excellence and/or devoted teaching in the image of Dr. Dale B. Wade, an ABO past president. The award was presented on April 24 at the ABO Awards Night in Chicago held in conjunction with the American Association of Orthodontists Annual Session.
Dr. Grubb is a former associate clinical professor in the Department of Surgery in the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of California-San Diego School of Medicine. He also is an advisory adjunct professor in the Orthodontic Department at A.T. Still Health Sciences University in Mesa, Ariz. Previously, he served as a clinical professor of orthodontics in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Illinois School of Dentistry, where he was the department’s managing partner. He also served as an associate clinical professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Southern California. Dr. Grubb was in the private practice of orthodontics in Chula Vista, Calif., for more than 35 years.
Board certified since 1981, Dr. Grubb was president of the ABO in the 2008-2009 year and served on the board of directors from 2001 to 2010. He received the Earl E. and Wilma S. Shepard Distinguished Service Award from the ABO in 2015.
In addition, Dr. Grubb was an associate editor of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics from 2013 to 2019. He is a senior retired member and past president of the Southern California Component of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists and is an honorary member of the Angle Society Midwest Component. Dr. Grubb is a past president of the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists and is a fellow of the Charles H. Tweed Foundation, Pierre Fauchard Academy, the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.
Dr. Grubb received his dental degree-magna cum laude-from Georgetown University School of Dentistry in 1966 and served in the U.S. Navy as a dentist and anesthetist from 1966-69. He earned his master’s degree and certificate in orthodontics from the University of Washington in
1971. His bachelor’s degree in pharmacy in 1962 is from the University of Maryland. He is a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society.
On receiving the award, Dr. Grubb said, “I am truly honored on being selected to receive the 2023 Dale B. Wade Award of Excellence in Orthodontics. It is an even greater honor to be placed in such distinguished ranks as those of the past honorees, some of whom have been my colleagues at one time or another. They all have made important contributions to the progress and excellence in the Specialty of Orthodontics. Finally, my deepest appreciation must go to my wife and family who also deserve this award perhaps more than me.”
