ADA Policy for Examination Accommodations
In compliance with Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) is committed to providing reasonable accommodations, including appropriate auxiliary aids, to examinees with disabilities. The ABO ensures that its examinations are conducted in accessible facilities or alternative accessible arrangements are made.
1. Request Process

- Examinees will initiate the process of requesting an accommodation by either indicating so when they register for the exam, or by emailing the appropriate administrator:

- Once an examinee has initiated an accommodation request, they will be given access to the application in their ABO Portal so they can complete the application and submit their required documentation.

3. Required Documentation

- Previous Accommodations:
- Documentation of any prior accommodations from educational institutions or testing agencies.
- If no prior accommodations exist, the candidate must explain why current circumstances require accommodations.
- Medical Documentation:
- A recent evaluation (within the past five years) from a licensed professional (e.g., physician or psychologist) detailing the current nature and severity of the disability and its impact on test-taking abilities.
- For long-standing diagnoses, older documentation can be included if accompanied by a recent confirmation letter.
- The evaluation must be on professional letterhead and include:

1. The professional's qualifications, contact information, and original signature.
2. The candidate's name and date of evaluation.

4. A comprehensive interpretation of the results, where applicable.
5. Specific diagnosis and description of functional limitations.
6. Recomended accommodations and rationale for each.
Additional Information
- Ensure all submitted documentation is complete to avoid delays.
- The ABO reserves the right to verify the disability and request additional documentation if necessary.
- Requests that fundamentally alter the purpose and nature of the examination will not be accommodated.
